The government shutdown is now the longest in U.S. history, surpassing the previous record set in 2019 on Tuesday evening, the 35th day of the funding lapse.

Trump blamed the government shutdown in part for GOP losses and demanded the Senate end the filibuster.

“It was snaking around all different parts of the regular area,” Cara Bergeron said after flying from Houston to Atlanta.

The Senate on Friday failed to pass a bill to pay federal workers forced to work without pay during the government shutdown, with Democrats refusing to yield to GOP attempts to fund any parts of the federal government without major concessions for their party.

Republican senators are trying to end the government shutdown by preparing a bipartisan package of spending bills that they hope will win new Democratic votes.

“In other words, we’re going to keep federal employees hostage,” he said. “It’s about leverage isn’t it, that’s what ya’ll have been saying.”
